Colonists from different European nations had other reasons for settling colonies in North America. European countries began to compete for wealth around the world. Their rivalry was exacerbated by religious differences. Until the 1500s, the Roman Catholic Church was the only church in Western Europe. That unity ended when a major religious reform movement sharply divided Christians. In the English colonies, the traditions of representative government we have now in the United States began to take root.
